Homeless… Again (An Escape from the Comfort Zone)

Tustin MeadowsTwenty-three years ago, at just 19 years old, I was homeless.

I wasn’t on drugs or alcoholic. I was just an angry, misguided kid with problems I didn’t know how to handle.

I spent the better part of six months sleeping on a park bench in Tustin Meadows Park in Tustin, California, USA.

I am now homeless again. But not in the way you might think…This time, things are a little different.

For instance, this time I have my wife, Kayla, with me. And instead of living on the street, we’re living in four- and five-star hotels.

After three years of talking about traveling the world, on Valentine’s Day 2015 we decided to stop talking and to start doing.

We set out to take action.  MASSIVE action.

We decided to begin traveling the world full-time… indefinitely.

We started by calling the landlord of our beautiful beach house in Corona Del Mar, CA and asking what it would take to get out of our lease four months early. Not really sure what to expect, we were surprised when she said yes and had people knocking on the door to see the home the next day.

Just like that, we had our “Freedom day” within our sights.

This was one of many freedom dates for me: quitting smoking forever (September 6, 1998), leaving corporate America for good (December 6, 2004), ending all toxic relationships in my life and having a higher standard for relationships in my life (June 6, 2011). (Interesting they are all sixes… what does that mean?? -Michael)

This time, our “Freedom” date was March 26th, 2015… and we had less than four weeks to make arrangements and get out.

As we looked at the mass of “stuff” we had collected over the years — both personal and business — the task seemed insurmountable.

What were we going to DO with all of it? What would it mean about us if we were no longer attached to “stuff”?

The next three weeks were a whirlwind. I gave my car to my son, sold my motorcycle. We held an estate sale and either sold, donated or trashed 85% of what we own. Our last loose thread was selling Kayla’s car to the dealership on the day we left.

People kept coming to us with worried looks in their eyes saying things like, “Where will you live?” and “How will you make money?”

The fact is, I’ve been designing my business for just this kind of thing for the last nine years.

I ran Transform Destiny by myself until 2013 when Kayla came on board full-time. My primary focus of Transform Destiny has always been to transform as many lives as I can with as small a “footprint” as possible, and that required me to think about business in a different way.

I have been automating, delegating and eliminating “stuff” for years, so my business practically runs itself.

Now we had to do the same thing with our life.

Joseph Campbell once said the key to living a fulfilled life is to, “follow your bliss.”

When the whisper comes to do something really spectacular, most people are consumed by the fear of leaving their Comfort Zones.

The rest of us are free.

Follow your bliss. Chase rainbows. Do the unthinkable.

Your dream life is waiting for you.

Hello Michael & Kayla, Love your story and both of you! The number 666 has Biblical meaning, it’s the name of a beast or anti-Christ during end times. You can look it up yourselves or use the links: http://www.gotquestions.org/meaning-of-666.html, http://www.biblestudy.org/bibleref/meaning-of-numbers-in-bible/666.html. I am NO Theologian but have read this in a Bible verse. I’m studying the Book of Isaiah and will ask my instructor next week what her knowledge is of the “name” 666. Great blog post!!! I look forward to many updates. Thank you for leading the way! love, hugs and blessings, Deana

  2. Michael Says:

Thanks, Deana! Since they were all separate, isolated incidences, I don’t think it’s 666. Just 6. 🙂

Interestingly enough, we walked by a Catholic church today at the street address 666. I thought that was an interesting choice of property.

  4. Michael Says:

Thank you, Bianca! We didn’t always have those things either. It just takes desire, focus and determination. You create your life! 🙂

  5. Joy Says:

There Is a building in Costa Mesa by the name of Bethel (house of God) towers. What is the address? 666. Gets me every time. Who would do that?

  6. Michael Says:

    That’s creepy, Joy! I don’t get it!

  7. Robbie Says:

Mike…awesome and exciting news. You’ve always been an inspiration to me. The number 6 in Biblical numerology is the number for man and the imperfection or incompleteness of man’s work…so I’m heaping prayers on you and Kayla that in you adventures ahead you find your perfection and completeness. God Bless brother!

  8. Michael Says:

Thanks, Robbie! We’ll take them! 🙂

Hey y’all. I’m almost literally homeless right now, and when I saw your post, I really came here to express my empathy in the fact that you actually were and let you know that I have been there – and may soon be again.

Reading your full post, however, I see that you are quite well with the whole thing, as opposed to me, living with my so-called girlfriend who is emotionally and at times physically abusive simply because I have literally no other place to go that is safe.

At first I was a little upset to be deceived by the sensationalism of the title, your “hook” to draw us into reading about your “plight”, but as I read I understand and the “upset” went away.

Unfortunately it does nothing for my own situation, though. I still struggle daily, even hourly – or by the minute at times! – to maintain my own sanity, rationality, and self control as she is going off the deep end and I’m standing there taking this barrage of emotionally and mentally toxic behavior without going into an Aspie meltdown (Yes, I have Aspergers Syndrome) which is potentially dangerous for me, and should I have a PTSD flashback at the same time, I could potentially wake up in a hospital, or worse, jail.

So, while I’m glad that you are actually doing well, I’m desperately seeking employment and a safe roof over my head and that of my service animal and where I am there are no real options – and traveling to somewhere else is out of the question at the moment.

I wish you well with your lifestyle, but I would suggest maybe in the future that you avoid using the term “homeless” to describe your situation.

I am, by the hour, unsure of my residential security and I’m scared to death of actually being in that situation again.

“Homeless” – not by choice, not by design, but by force and utter lack of ability to change the situation.

    Thank you.

    Hi Zach,
Thanks for your note. I see how that could come across as callous and insulting and I assure you that was not my intent. I have sent you a personal email. Please check your inbox for it. -Michael

Also, 666 (or 616 in some translations) is not necessarily the “mark” of the beast in the book of Revelation.

It was a symbol, for sure, but through the understanding of John the Apostle looking ahead through time in the visions being revealed by Jesus, it was very likely an Arabic (Muslim) symbol. In writing that symbol down, and later monks and scribes translating into Latin and later English and other languages, that symbol was misunderstood and turned into the numerical representation we have today.

Also, the word “mark” doesn’t necessarily mean that there is a physical mark on the skin, but probably more likely was a word mistranslated from a word meaning “badge” like an insignia.

If you look at all of this in context, and you see what is going on in Iraq, Syria, and elsewhere in the region with ISIS, you see all these Christians and people who are sympathetic to the “West” being slaughtered. They wear “badges” of a symbol or phrase in Islam which according to some research done by a former Muslim who converted to Christianity not many years ago, is likely the symbol/phrase that the Apostle John saw in his visions but did not fully understand – or later the monks and other translators would have no knowledge of its meaning so they did the best they could.

All this being said, there is nothing to fear from your having a series of three 6s in a row – even if it literally was 666 your series are so loosely connected that they are individual, isolated from each other numerically and chronologically, it’s seriously just an interesting “coincidence.”

As for the rest, watch and pray.
