The collection of Card Verification Value (CVV) and Card Identification Number (CID) is an important security feature for transactions where the customer can not physically present their credit card to the seller. These values are a cryptographic check of the information embossed on the card and helps validate that the customer has the credit card in their possession and that the card account is legitimate.
Generally the three digit CVV value is printed in the signature panel on the back of Visa, MasterCard and Discover credit cards immediately following the credit card account number. For most American Express cards the four digit CID number is located on the front of the card above the account number.
