What is NLP or Neuro-Linguistic Programming?

Neuro-Linguistic Programming, or NLP, is a set of rapid-change techniques, originally created by Richard Bandler and John Grinder in the mid-1970s. Taken literally, the definition of NLP is:

  • Neuro: Having to do with our nervous system, in which our experience is filtered through our senses:
    • Visual
    • Auditory
    • Kinesthetic
    • Olfactory
    • Gustatory
  • Linguistic: Having to do with our language - both verbal and nonverbal - through which our internal representations of the world are encoded, organized and given meaning:
    • Pictures
    • Sounds
    • Feelings
    • Smells
    • Tastes
    • Self-Talk
  • Programming: Having to do with the discovery and use of the programs we run in our own minds – and the minds of others – to achieve our desired outcomes.

So, NLP is about learning how to use the language of the mind to produce behavior that ultimately achieves our desired outcomes.

To put it more simply, NLP is the study and adaptation of excellence.
