Hierarchy of Ideas in NLP

Hierarchy of Ideas describes how to master the art of communication by controlling the flow of conversation or ideas from abstract to specific, and vice versa.

Chunking Up

We chunk up to get agreement. We also chunk up to separate intention from behavior and to bring people into trance. You can ask the following three example questions:

  • What is this an example of?
  • For what purpose?
  • What is your intention?

Chunk Down

We chunk down to get details and distinctions. We also chunk down to maintain agreement for action, and to bring people out of trance. You can ask the following three example questions

  • What are examples of this?
  • What specifically?
  • Or any Meta Model question

Lateral Chunking

We lateral chunk to access other examples. The structure of intuition is the ability for one to chunk up, find connections and relationships, and then chunk back down and relate to the current situtation.

  1. Ask, "What is this an example of?" one or many times to chunk up.
  2. Ask, "What are other examples of this?" to lateral chunk.
  3. Ask, "What are examples of this?" as many times as needed to chunk back down.
